Key takeaways · then go as deep as you like
  1. 1Chevening funds a one-year master’s in the UK in full: tuition, a monthly stipend, flights and the visa.
  2. 2It is one of the most competitive scholarships in the world: roughly 1,400 awards a year from tens of thousands of applications.
  3. 3You need at least 2,800 hours (about two years) of work experience and a degree that gets you into a UK master’s.
  4. 4Selection rests on four essays: leadership, networking, why the UK, and your career plan. Specific evidence beats impressive adjectives.
  5. 5Pakistan’s cohort has shrunk recently as UK budgets tightened, so the bar is higher than it was a few years ago.
  6. 6You must return to Pakistan for at least two years after your award; selectors want to see what you will do when you come back.

01Chevening In One Minute

Chevening is the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations. It pays for a one-year taught master’s degree at almost any UK university, for people the British government expects to become leaders and influencers in their own countries.

That last part is the key to the whole application. Chevening is not an academic scholarship that rewards the highest CGPA. It is closer to a leadership investment. The selectors are trying to answer one question: will this person, after a year in the UK, go home and make a visible difference in their field, and stay connected to the UK while doing it?

For Pakistani applicants this means a 3.9 CGPA with no work story will usually lose to a 3.2 CGPA with a clear record of leading people, changing something at work and a believable plan for the next ten years. Grades matter only in so far as they get you into a good UK master’s.

The short version

Chevening = fully funded one-year master’s in the UK

  • for people with at least two years of work experience
  • who show leadership and a clear plan
  • and who will return to Pakistan for two years afterwards.

02The Numbers: How Competitive Is It Really?

Chevening is consistently described as one of the most competitive scholarships in the world, and the numbers support that. UK government answers to Parliament show the FCDO awarded 1,401 scholarships in 2024–25, 1,332 in 2023–24 and 1,359 in 2022–23. Chevening has said publicly that it receives tens of thousands of applications each year, and independent estimates put the overall success rate at around 2–3 percent.

Pakistan has historically been one of the larger Chevening countries. The British High Commission reported 43 Pakistani Chevening scholars in the September 2024 cohort, alongside 47 Commonwealth scholars, and over 60 percent of those Chevening scholars were women. Ten years earlier the number had been much lower; the High Commission described a fourfold increase between 2014 and the late 2010s.

The trend has since reversed. UK aid budgets have been cut, several Chevening fellowships were paused for 2027–28, and the 2026 send-off in Pakistan was for 33 scholars across Chevening and Commonwealth combined. Nobody outside the FCDO knows the exact Pakistan quota for 2027–28, but you should plan on the assumption that places are fewer than in 2024 and that competition is tighter.

CohortPakistani scholarsWhat it tells you

2026 (sent Aug 2026)33 across Chevening and CommonwealthFewer places after budget cuts

Counsellor’s tip: Treat the low success rate as information, not discouragement. Most applications fail for fixable reasons: thin essays, generic course choices and a career plan that sounds like a wish. Those are exactly the parts you control.

03What Chevening Pays For

Chevening is fully funded. In recent cycles the award has covered:

  • University tuition fees (in full, or up to a cap agreed with the university).
  • A monthly living stipend for 12 months, set at a higher rate for London than for the rest of the UK. Recent cycles have been around £1,500 a month in London and around £1,200 elsewhere; the exact figure is set each year.
  • An economy return flight from Pakistan to the UK.
  • The cost of your UK student visa application.
  • An arrival allowance and a homeward departure allowance.
  • Travel grants to attend Chevening events in the UK.

What it does not cover: the Immigration Health Surcharge is normally covered as part of the visa package, but check your award letter; dependants are not funded; and anything above the agreed tuition cap may be your responsibility. Chevening’s own terms for each year are the final word.

Watch out: Some expensive courses (for example certain MBAs and London programmes) cost more than Chevening’s tuition cap. If you choose one, the university or you may have to cover the difference. Check before you list it as a choice.

04The Return Commitment

Every Chevening scholar agrees to return to their home country for a minimum of two years after the award ends. This is not a formality. Your essays and interview are partly a test of whether your plan in Pakistan is real.

In practice this means your career plan should be anchored in Pakistan: a specific organisation, sector, policy area or business you will work in, and what you will change there. Applicants who hint that the UK master’s is a route to settling abroad rarely get far.

“The Chevening programme helps develop a new generation of Pakistani leaders and changemakers.”

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, announcing the 2024 Pakistani cohort

05The Eligibility Checklist

Before you invest weeks in essays, confirm you meet every basic rule. For Pakistani applicants in the 2027–28 cycle, these were the core requirements:

  1. 1Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country (Pakistan is eligible).
  2. 2Agree to return to Pakistan for at least two years after the award.
  3. 3Hold an undergraduate degree that will let you enter a UK postgraduate programme by the time you start.
  4. 4Have at least 2,800 hours of work experience by the application deadline.
  5. 5Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and hold an unconditional offer from one of them by the July deadline.
  6. 6Meet the English language requirement of the university you will attend.

A few common Pakistani questions:

SituationUsually fine?Notes
4-year BS (16 years)YesThe standard route into a UK master’s.
2-year BA/BSc + 2-year MA/MScYesMany UK universities accept this combination as equivalent to a UK bachelor’s.
2-year BA/BSc only (14 years)Usually noMost UK universities will not admit you to a master’s; check each course.
MBBSYesCommon route for public-health and health-policy master’s.
Already hold a UK master’s funded by the UK governmentNoPrevious UK-government-funded scholars are not eligible.

Counsellor’s tip: Do the eligibility arithmetic now, not in September. If you are short of 2,800 hours by the deadline, the system will not let you submit, and part-time hours only count for the hours actually worked.

06What Counts As Work Experience

Chevening accepts a broad definition of work experience, and many applicants undersell themselves by only listing their current job. Hours can come from:

  • Full-time or part-time employment.
  • Voluntary work, including long-term volunteering with an NGO or community organisation.
  • Paid or unpaid internships.
  • Work in your own business or family business, if you can describe your role and responsibilities.

Work completed during your undergraduate degree can count if it was in addition to your studies. Mandatory placements that were part of your degree are a grey area; describe them accurately and let the rules decide.

Experience matters far more for its content than its length. Two years where you led a small team, changed a process or built something will read better than six years of routine work. Selectors look for growth: more responsibility over time, and examples of you influencing people who did not report to you.

07Who Should Think Twice Before Applying

Chevening suits a particular kind of applicant. It is a poor fit if:

  • You want a PhD or a two-year master’s. Chevening funds one-year taught master’s degrees only.
  • You want to stay in the UK after graduating. The return requirement makes this incompatible.
  • Your career plan is mainly academic research. Research-heavy plans usually fit Commonwealth PhD awards or university scholarships better.
  • You have no leadership examples beyond your degree. It may be worth getting one more year of experience and applying next cycle.

If that sounds like you, read our Commonwealth, Fulbright and Erasmus Mundus guides; one of them may be a better match for your profile.

08What Selectors Are Looking For

Chevening tells applicants what it values, and the application form mirrors it. The four essay prompts map to four qualities:

1

Leadership and influence

Evidence that you can lead people, influence decisions and create change, not just hold a job title.

2

Networking

How you build and use relationships, and how you will connect with the UK during and after your year there.

3

Studying in the UK

Why these three courses, why the UK, and how they fit your plan.

4

Career plan

Where you will be in five to ten years, in Pakistan, and how the master’s and network get you there.

Behind the four prompts is a single quality selectors probe again and again: specificity. Specific organisations, specific numbers, specific people you influenced, specific roles you will take on. Vague ambition (“I want to contribute to the development of Pakistan”) is the single most common weakness we see.

09The Typical Successful Pakistani Applicant

There is no single Chevening profile, and selectors deliberately pick a mix of sectors, cities and backgrounds. But across the Pakistani applicants we have worked with and the scholars we know, successful candidates tend to share a pattern:

Typical successful applicant (TeamOnline observation)

Work experience
3–7 years, with clear progression
Degree
16 years; strong but not necessarily top CGPA
Leadership
Has led a team, project, initiative or campaign
Sector
Public policy, development, health, education, media, tech, business
Career plan
A named role or organisation in Pakistan in 5–10 years
English
IELTS 6.5–7.5 depending on courses
UK links
Can name UK institutions or people relevant to their work
Courses
Three well-matched one-year master’s at varied selectivity

An observation from the files we see, not an official profile. Applicants outside this pattern do win every year.

Notice what is missing: a perfect CGPA, an elite university in Pakistan, or connections. Selectors routinely select people from smaller cities and less famous universities whose essays show real influence where they are.

ProfileLikely outcomeWhy
3.8 CGPA, 2 years in a large bank, no leadership examplesWeakStrong academics, but nothing that shows influence or a plan beyond the next promotion.
3.1 CGPA, 4 years at a district health NGO, led a vaccination outreach teamStrongClear leadership, measurable impact and an obvious use for a UK public-health master’s.
3.4 CGPA, 3 years as a journalist, built a fact-checking deskStrongInfluence, initiative and a specific plan in Pakistani media.
3.5 CGPA, 5 years in IT, wants an MSc to move abroadWeakConflicts with the return requirement.

10Choosing Your Three Courses

You must choose three different eligible courses at UK universities. This is a strategic decision, not an administrative one, because your “Studying in the UK” essay and your interview will both test whether your choices make sense.

  1. 1Start from your career plan, then pick the subject. If you want to reform tax administration in Pakistan, a public-policy or economics master’s makes sense; a generic MBA does not.
  2. 2Choose three courses that tell the same story. Three different subjects suggest you have not decided what you want.
  3. 3Spread selectivity: one ambitious choice, one realistic, one safe. You need an unconditional offer by July, so do not choose three courses you might not get into.
  4. 4Check each course’s entry requirements against your degree, CGPA and English score before listing it.
  5. 5Check the cost against Chevening’s tuition cap.
  6. 6Look at the modules and the faculty. Being able to name two modules and one academic whose work matters to you is far more convincing than a ranking.

Counsellor’s tip: Apply to the universities early, in October to December. An unconditional offer before your interview strengthens your case and removes a source of stress in the spring.

Watch out: You cannot change your three choices freely after submission. Make the decision carefully before the deadline.

11Framing Your Story By Sector

The same four essays read very differently depending on where you work. Selectors meet bankers, civil servants, doctors, journalists and engineers in the same pile, so it helps to frame your story the way your sector creates impact.

SectorWhat leadership looks likeTypical coursesCareer plan anchor
Civil service / governmentChanging a process or policy, coordinating across departmentsPublic policy, public administration, economicsA named department, reform or programme
Development / NGOsDesigning or scaling a programme, building community trustDevelopment studies, public health, education policyA programme you will lead or an organisation you will build
Private sector / financeLaunching a product, turning around a team, entering a marketFinance, management, data analyticsA business or industry change, not just a promotion
HealthImproving outcomes, systems or access, beyond clinical workPublic health, health policy, global healthA health system or programme in Pakistan
Media and communicationsBuilding a desk, a format or an audience; fighting misinformationJournalism, media, digital communicationsA media outlet, newsroom or public-information effort
TechnologyBuilding something people use; leading engineers; digital public goodsComputer science, AI, innovation managementA product, start-up or digital government project
EducationImproving learning outcomes or access, training teachersEducation policy, educational leadershipA school network, curriculum or policy

Whatever your sector, the test is the same: show what you changed, for whom, and how you will change more after a year in the UK.

Counsellor’s tip: Private-sector applicants often think Chevening is “for government people”. It is not. Selectors pick entrepreneurs and corporate leaders every year; what matters is wider impact beyond your own profit or promotion.

12The Application Form, Section By Section

The Chevening form itself is straightforward; the effort goes into the essays. Expect to complete:

SectionWhat to watch
Personal details and eligibilityAnswer exactly as your passport and degree show.
EducationEvery degree, with grades and dates. Upload transcripts later if shortlisted.
Work experienceList each role with dates and hours. Make sure the total reaches 2,800.
Course choicesThree eligible courses at UK universities, in order of preference.
RefereesTwo referees with professional emails; they upload references separately.
Four essaysEach between roughly 100 and 500 words; confirm the limit in your form.

Write the essays offline first, in a document you can edit and share with reviewers, then paste them in. The form times out, and you will want several drafts anyway.

13Essay 1: Leadership And Influence

This essay asks you to describe how you have demonstrated leadership and influence. It is the essay most Pakistani applicants write worst, because they describe titles and duties instead of actions and results.

A strong leadership essay usually follows one story in depth rather than listing five achievements. Use a simple structure:

1

Situation

One or two sentences of context: where you were and what the problem was.

2

Your action

What you personally did. Use “I”, not “we”. Show how you persuaded people, especially people you did not manage.

3

Obstacle

What went wrong or who resisted, and how you handled it. This is where leadership shows.

4

Result

A concrete outcome, ideally with a number: people reached, time saved, money raised, policy changed.

5

Reflection

What you learned about leading, and how it shapes the leader you are becoming.

Example of the difference

  • Weak“As team lead I was responsible for managing a team of five and ensuring timely delivery of projects.”
  • Strong“When our district office missed its immunisation targets for three months, I proposed a door-to-door schedule built around Friday prayers. The supervisor refused; I ran it on my own team for two weeks, showed a 40 percent rise in coverage and he adopted it across all six union councils.”

Watch out: Do not invent or inflate. Selectors interview you on exactly these stories, and references can contradict exaggerations.

14Essay 2: Networking

The networking essay asks how you build and maintain relationships, and how you will use the Chevening network. Applicants often misread it as a request to list professional associations.

Instead, show that you deliberately build relationships to get things done. Good material includes: a partnership you built between organisations, a community you grew, a mentor relationship that changed your direction, or a coalition you assembled for a cause.

Then make the UK link specific. Name the kinds of people, institutions or alumni you will connect with during your year, and what you will do with those relationships when you return. For example, a health-policy applicant might mention working with a UK public-health school’s global health unit and building a link back to a provincial health department.

Counsellor’s tip: Two concrete examples beat ten vague ones. “I organised a monthly meet-up for women engineers in Multan that grew from 6 to 120 members” tells selectors more than a list of LinkedIn groups.

15Essay 3: Studying In The UK

This essay explains your three course choices and why the UK is the right place for them. It should read as a logical consequence of your career plan.

  1. 1Explain the gap: what you need to learn to achieve your plan that you cannot learn in your current job or in Pakistan.
  2. 2Show why each course fills that gap. Name specific modules, research centres or practical components.
  3. 3Explain why the UK specifically: a policy model, an industry, a research tradition or a type of institution that matters to your field.
  4. 4Keep the three courses consistent. If one is different, explain why.

Avoid ranking-based reasoning (“because it is a top-10 university”). Selectors see it constantly and it says nothing about you.

16Essay 4: Career Plan

The career plan essay is where the return requirement becomes real. Selectors want to see a plan with stages, anchored in Pakistan, that a Chevening year makes possible.

  1. 1

    Immediately after returning

A specific role you will take or return to, and what you will apply from the master’s.

  2. 2

    In 3–5 years

A larger role or initiative: leading a unit, launching a programme, building an organisation.

  3. 3

    In 10 years

The change you want to have led in your sector, and how you will measure it.

Be specific without being rigid. “I will lead the data unit of the Punjab Revenue Authority” is more convincing than “I will work in the public sector”, even if you end up somewhere slightly different. Selectors understand plans change; they want to see that you have one.

Watch out: Do not make the plan depend on things outside your control (“when I become Prime Minister…”). Ambition is good; implausibility is not.

17Worked Essay Outlines

Here is how three different Pakistani applicants might plan their essays before writing. Use the structure, not the content: your stories must be your own.

Outline A: civil servant

  • ProfilePolicy officer, Planning & Development Department, 5 years.
  • LeadershipLed the switch from paper to digital monitoring of 140 school-rehabilitation projects; overcame resistance from district engineers by co-designing the forms with them; cut reporting time from six weeks to five days.
  • NetworkingBuilt a working group of planning officers from three provinces that now shares monitoring templates monthly.
  • UK studyMSc Public Policy, MSc Development Management, MPA – each for evidence-based policy and programme evaluation.
  • Career planLead the department’s new monitoring and evaluation wing within three years; build a provincial evaluation unit within ten.

Outline B: entrepreneur

  • ProfileFounder of an ed-tech start-up in Peshawar, 4 years.
  • LeadershipGrew a tutoring app from a WhatsApp group to 18,000 students; persuaded a local school chain to pilot it despite cost concerns.
  • NetworkingPartnership with a telecom company for zero-rated data; mentor network of 30 teachers.
  • UK studyMSc Education and Technology, MSc Learning and Technology, MSc Digital Education – to build evidence of learning impact.
  • Career planScale to government schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa through a public–private partnership; long-term, shape national digital-learning standards.

Outline C: health professional

  • ProfileMedical officer turned public-health coordinator, 6 years.
  • LeadershipCoordinated a dengue response across 12 union councils; introduced a household reporting system with Lady Health Workers.
  • NetworkingLinked the district health office with a university lab for faster testing.
  • UK studyMSc Public Health (three universities with strong epidemiology and global health).
  • Career planLead disease surveillance at the provincial level; build a regional early-warning network.

Notice that each outline has a single thread running through all four essays. That consistency is what makes an application memorable.

18References

You need two referees. They submit references through the system after you nominate them, usually with a short window after the main deadline. Choose people who:

  • Know your work well and recently, ideally a line manager and one other senior colleague or academic.
  • Can give concrete examples of your leadership, not generic praise.
  • Will respond to emails on time; a missing reference can sink an otherwise strong application.

Brief each referee. Send them your essays, your course choices and two or three stories you would like them to mention. A good reference corroborates your essays with an independent voice.

20The Selection Timeline

The cycle runs for about 13 months from opening to arrival in the UK. For the 2027–28 cycle the dates were:

  1. 1

    Early August 2026

    Applications open

The 2027–28 round opened on 4 August 2026.

  2. 2

    6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC

    Applications close

Referees get a short window afterwards.

  3. 3

    October–February

    Reading and shortlisting

Applications are scored against the selection criteria.

  4. 4

    February–April 2027

    Interviews

Shortlisted applicants are interviewed by a panel.

  5. 5

    June 2027

    Conditional awards

Results are announced; some candidates are placed on a reserve list.

  6. 6

    July 2027

    Unconditional offer deadline

You must hold an unconditional offer from one of your three courses.

  7. 7

    September 2027

    Departure

Most courses start in September or October.

Counsellor’s tip: The best time to start is the spring before the round opens. Use May to July to collect stories, take IELTS if needed, research courses and draft the essays, so August and September are for refining, not starting.

21The Interview

If you are shortlisted, you will be invited to an interview, typically around 30 minutes with a small panel that may include staff from the British High Commission and Chevening alumni. The panel will have read your application and will probe your essays.

Interview questions follow the four selection criteria. Prepare stories, not scripts. Expect questions such as:

AreaTypical questions
LeadershipTell us about a time you led a team through a difficult situation. What would you do differently?
InfluenceDescribe a time you changed someone’s mind. How did you do it?
NetworkingHow will you use the Chevening network? Who in the UK do you want to meet and why?
Course choiceWhy this course and not a similar one in Pakistan? Which module matters most to you?
Career planWhere will you be in five years? What happens if that role isn’t available?
UK–PakistanWhat can the UK learn from Pakistan in your field? How will you stay connected?
Current affairsWhat is the biggest challenge facing your sector in Pakistan right now?
  1. 1Re-read your application the night before. Most questions come from it.
  2. 2Prepare six to eight stories you can adapt to different questions.
  3. 3Answer the question asked, in about 90 seconds, then stop.
  4. 4Be honest about weaknesses and what you learned from them.
  5. 5Prepare two thoughtful questions to ask at the end.

Shortlisted? A mock panel with feedback is the single most useful thing you can do before your Chevening interview.

22How To Structure Interview Answers

Panels listen for structure. A simple framework keeps your answers focused and stops you rambling when nervous:

1

Answer first

Start with a one-sentence direct answer to the question.

2

One example

Give one specific story, with your action and a result.

3

Link to the future

Connect it to your plan or the UK year.

4

Stop

End cleanly. Let the panel ask follow-ups.

A worked answer

  • Q: How will you use the Chevening network?
  • Answer first“To build a link between UK public-health researchers and district health managers in Punjab.”
  • Example“At work I connected our district office with a university lab and cut dengue test turnaround from five days to two. I want to do the same at a larger scale.”
  • Future“During my MSc I will join the global health society and attend Chevening events on health systems; when I return I plan to bring two UK researchers into our surveillance review each year.”

Watch out: Panels notice memorised answers. Practise ideas and stories, not exact sentences.

23Documents If You Are Shortlisted

Shortlisted candidates are asked to upload supporting documents. Prepare them early so you are not chasing a university registrar in February:

  • Passport (valid for the whole period of study).
  • Degree certificates and transcripts for each degree (attested copies, translated if not in English).
  • Two reference letters, if not already submitted.
  • Any English test results you already hold.

HEC degree attestation can take weeks during busy seasons. If your degree is not yet attested, start the process as soon as you submit your application.

24From Conditional Award To Departure

A conditional award is not the finish line. Between June and September you must:

1

Secure your unconditional offer

Meet every condition of your university offer, including English scores and final transcripts, by the July deadline.

2

Accept your award

Complete Chevening’s acceptance steps and paperwork.

3

Apply for your visa

Chevening covers the visa cost. You still need your CAS, a TB test certificate and the online application.

4

Prepare for the UK

Accommodation, pre-departure briefing and arranging your flight through the programme.

The TB test is required for Pakistani applicants for UK visas of more than six months, and must be done at an approved clinic. Book it as soon as you have your award.

25Budgeting Your Chevening Year

The stipend is designed to cover a modest student lifestyle, not to let you save or support family. How far it goes depends heavily on the city.

Cost (per month)London (typical)Elsewhere in the UK (typical)
Shared room or student hall£900–£1,300£550–£850
Food and groceries£250–£350£200–£300
Transport£100–£180£40–£90
Phone and personal£50–£120£50–£100
TotalOften close to the full stipendUsually leaves some margin

Pakistani scholars outside London often manage comfortably and travel to Chevening events on the travel grant. In London, plan carefully and book accommodation early: the first weeks are the most expensive.

Counsellor’s tip: Arrive with some savings for the first month. Stipend payments, bank accounts and deposits can take a few weeks to settle.

26Life As A Chevening Scholar

Beyond the degree, the Chevening year includes events, conferences and networking opportunities across the UK. Scholars meet peers from more than 150 countries, and many say the network matters as much as the master’s.

Back home, Pakistan has nearly 2,000 Chevening alumni, many in senior roles in government, business, media and development. The alumni association runs events and is often a source of mentorship for new applicants: ask alumni in your sector to read your essays.

27Your 12-Month Chevening Plan

Working back from a September 2027 start, a realistic plan looks like this:

  1. 1

    April–May

    Decide

Confirm eligibility, choose your field and list possible courses.

  2. 2

    June

    Collect stories

Write down ten work stories with numbers: problems, actions, results.

  3. 3

    July

    Draft

First drafts of all four essays; IELTS if needed.

  4. 4

    August

    Round opens

Refine essays with feedback; brief referees.

  5. 5

    September

    Apply to universities

Submit UK university applications; finalise essays.

  6. 6

    Early October

    Submit Chevening

Submit at least a week before the deadline.

  7. 7

    Nov–Jan

    Offers and preparation

Chase university decisions; start interview practice.

  8. 8

    Feb–Apr

    Interview

Mock interviews, then the real panel.

  9. 9

    Jun–Aug

    Award to departure

    Conditions, unconditional offer, visa, travel.

28Chevening vs Commonwealth vs Fulbright

Many Pakistani applicants apply to more than one of the big three. They are compatible as applications, but very different in what they reward.

If you have strong leadership and two-plus years of work, Chevening is often your best UK option. If you are earlier in your career with strong academics and a development focus, Commonwealth may fit better. If you want the US or a PhD, look at Fulbright.

29If You Don’t Get It This Year

Many Chevening scholars won on their second or third attempt. A rejection usually means the essays did not yet show enough evidence, not that you are unsuitable. If you are not shortlisted:

  • Ask yourself honestly which essay was weakest, and get an outside view.
  • Spend the year building one strong new leadership story at work.
  • Use the time to secure strong university offers early next cycle.
  • Apply in parallel to Commonwealth, university scholarships (for example GREAT scholarships or university awards) and Erasmus Mundus.

Keep a copy of your essays. Rewriting them a year later, with more experience and distance, often produces a dramatically better application.

Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

01Is Chevening fully funded for Pakistani students?

Yes. It covers tuition (up to a cap), a monthly living stipend, return flights, the visa cost and allowances for one year of master’s study in the UK.

02How many Pakistanis get Chevening each year?

It varies. The September 2024 cohort had 43 Pakistani Chevening scholars; the 2026 send-off was for 33 scholars across Chevening and Commonwealth combined, reflecting UK budget cuts.

03What is the Chevening success rate?

Globally around 1,400 awards are made each year from tens of thousands of applications, so the success rate is roughly 2–3 percent. It varies by country and year.

04Do I need IELTS to apply for Chevening?

Chevening itself does not set a separate English requirement in recent cycles, but you must meet the English requirement of the university you will attend, which usually means IELTS or another accepted test.

05Can I apply for Chevening without work experience?

No. You need at least 2,800 hours of work experience, roughly two years full-time, by the application deadline. Part-time and voluntary work count.

06Can I apply for a PhD or two-year master’s with Chevening?

No. Chevening funds one-year taught master’s degrees. For a PhD, look at Commonwealth PhD scholarships or university-funded PhDs.

07When are Chevening interviews held?

Usually between February and April after the October deadline, with results in June.

08Can I reapply if I am rejected?

Yes. Many scholars succeed on a second or third attempt with stronger essays and more experience.
